Product description

Heliaflor® 55 is a sunflower protein concentrate made from dehulled and fully de-oiled sunflower kernels. The dehulled sunflower kernels are first partially de-oiled by mechanical pressing and then fully de-oiled by CO₂ extraction. The resulting crude protein is milled. Production takes place in Germany.

The gentle manufacturing process helps to preserve the sunflower protein in its native form. Heliaflor® 55 contains all essential amino acids, including the sulphur-containing amino acid methionine. This makes sunflower protein well suited for combining with pulse proteins, which typically contain lower levels of sulphur-containing amino acids. Conversely, pulse proteins can complement the amino acid profile of sunflower protein with their higher lysine content.

Sunflower kernels naturally contain vitamin E, vitamin B1, vitamin B6 and folic acid, among other nutrients. The actual levels in the sunflower protein may be subject to natural and batch-related variation.

Particularly noteworthy are the emulsifying capacity and the mild, nutty taste of Heliaflor® 55. The sunflower protein can be used as a binder, texturiser and stabiliser in a wide range of food recipes. With a glutamic acid content of approx. 10%, Heliaflor® 55 is also suitable for use in savoury recipes.

Manufacturing process

CO₂ extraction (oils)

CO₂ extraction (oils)

Natural

Extraction with supercritical CO₂ at moderate temperatures and in the absence of oxygen – particularly gentle on heat-sensitive constituents.

CO₂-extracted oils are obtained using supercritical carbon dioxide. Under pressure, the carbon dioxide reaches a supercritical state and can therefore be used as an extraction solvent for the oil constituents.

This physical process allows comparatively moderate temperatures to be used. As a result, the oils are subjected to less thermal stress during extraction than with some other manufacturing processes. The CO₂ is then removed again; with proper process control, no residues of the extraction solvent remain in the oil.

Cold-pressed (oils)

Cold-pressed (oils)

Natural

Obtained by pressing without external heat, then filtered – neither refined nor deodorised.

The term ‘cold-pressed’ means that the oil has been obtained by pressing without the application of external heat and then filtered. It is neither refined nor deodorised. The term gives no precise indication of the temperature actually reached.

Cold-pressed oils have a limited shelf life and – with a few exceptions – should not be heated to high temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions about the product

What role do amino acids play in Heliaflor® sunflower protein?
Proteins are made up of up to 20 different amino acids as building blocks, linked by peptide bonds. These amino acids can be divided into essential and semi-essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are vital but cannot be produced by the body itself, so an adequate intake from food is important. This group includes isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Semi-essential amino acids such as arginine and histidine, on the other hand, cannot be produced by the body only during certain stages of development, e.g. in newborns.

A list of the average amino acid contents is available from us on request.
