Even if you would not expect it at first glance, cosmetics and upcycling go together extremely well. Upcycling beauty is on trend as customers increasingly value sustainability, resource conservation and waste avoidance. As in other industries, seemingly useless by-products or waste materials are turned into high-quality new products.
The focus of upcycling beauty is not on packaging but, above all, on the ingredients used in cosmetics. One of the triggers for this trend was a British cosmetics brand that successfully used spent coffee grounds from London coffee shops in body scrubs.
For AOT, upcycling beauty is much more than a short-lived trend. Many of our oils are made from by-products of food processing. One example is our high-quality organic pomegranate seed oil, which is obtained from the seeds left over from pomegranate juice production in Azerbaijan. Likewise, we press our organic rosehip seed oil from the seeds that a rosehip jam manufacturer has no use for. In this way, supposed waste is put to good use and treated as a valuable resource.
Holistic use of raw materials
For us, upcycling beauty does not end with the use of by-products. A central part of our philosophy is to use plants and fruits as completely as possible, so that no part is left unused.
Almonds, for example, give us both our organic almond oil and our organic almond protein. The press cake from oil production is by no means inferior – it is a high-quality basis for further applications. The same applies to the cashew nut: here we produce organic cashew flour and also obtain a stable organic cashew kernel oil.
Another example is hemp, which can be used in many ways. Leaves, stems and flowers serve as the basis for organic CBD oils, while the fibres are used in the textile industry. The hemp seeds in turn give us organic hemp seed oil and organic hemp protein.
For AOT, upcycling beauty means acting responsibly along the entire supply chain and treating natural resources with respect. Through the holistic use of raw materials, we contribute to a more sustainable future for the cosmetics industry.
Conclusion
Upcycling beauty stands for modern, resource-conserving cosmetics production in which by-products are deliberately upgraded and fully used. For AOT, this approach is an integral part of our daily work – with the aim of supplying high-quality plant-based ingredients sustainably and efficiently.
